Live Streaming to space with Major Peake
The BBC have been entertaining us with their innovations in technology and broadcasting since 1936, however in 2016 they captured the hearts and minds of the UK by live streaming the mission to the International Space station with Major Tim Peake.
Live Streaming The Six Nations Rugby Internationals Into Spac
This was the first time that the BBC had ever attempted something like this and Philip Bernie, the head of TV Sport at the BBC admitted that “it’s exciting to be involved in such a memorable event.”
“We’ve always tried to push the boundaries of broadcasting at the BBC, and streaming to space is an exciting first for us. We knew Tim was a massive rugby fan and now he can join the rest of the nation watching Scotland v England in the Six Nations.”

Live Streaming with Stargazing Live – BBC 2
BBC 2’s Stargazing Live had a 5 episode series on Tim Peake whilst he was in space. The BBC were able to capture the first moment he arrived at the International space station, first call home, first space walk and many more amazing moments that were all able to be live streamed to the UK.
‘Home: A VR Spacewalk’
Along with the Stargazing Live streaming you can put on his space boots and be sent 240 miles into the void above Earth in Home – a VR Spacewalk.
Inspired by NASA and ESA’s virtual reality training programme that Tim performed, along with other astronauts, the BBC created this fully interactive virtual reality experience to view on HTVive. It was created as part of the BBC Learning’s ongoing mission to engage the imaginations of the next generation of scientists and explorers.
‘Home: A VR Spacewalk’ is a fantastic way to be fully immersed into feeling what it is like to be an astronaut floating 250 miles above earth and experience amazing views of the spaceship, the space station and the universe.
“Aspiring Tim Peake’s will even be able to monitor their heart rate as they are plunged into an emergency scenario as they jet-pack home to the International Space Station.” said REWIND the company that the BBC Collaborated with to make this award winning film.
“Only a very small number of mankind has ever walk in space, but what Home – A VR Spacewalk attempts to do is bring together VR, storytelling and some of the latest thinking in pushing levels of immersion to give people their moment in space” says Tom Burton, BBC Creative Director and Producer. “It’s early days for immersive technologies and there is still much to learn about the editorial and technical challenges in VR, but the BBC is exploring what is possible with and understand its potential for audiences in the future.”
